THE CURATOR

How do you go from an elementary education degree to the world of adult film? For “Calli Cox,” a 1999 graduate of Eastern, it was a smoother than you think.

In an EIU Hall of Fame first, one of the inductees of the online shrine in February 2003 agreed to a Q & A with The Curator. Below, she talks about life as EIU's first adult film star, her favorite bar, her coolest teacher and what it’s like to be a bixsexual on Eastern’s campus.

Why did you choose EIU? Please, tell us about your educational background.
After graduating from high school, I attended Lincoln Trail College for 2 years where I earned my A.A. and A.S. degrees. From there, I was pretty sure that I wanted to attend EIU. In fact, I don't think I applied to any other universities. EIU was in a great location, the perfect size, I had friends there, and it had a great reputation for its Education Department.

Why did you want to be a teacher?
I've always loved kids. I guess I had hopes of making a difference. I have always been comfortable in front of the class, and I spent a lot of time around the classroom due to my older sister also being a teacher.

How did you get into the adult industry? How did you start out and how did you wind up in California?
After teaching junior high for a year, I resigned from that school. I moved to Champaign, IL, where I substitute taught for a year while stripping at night. I was tired of both jobs and wanted something new. Along the same time frame, I had written a letter to Playboy TV and sent them some pics. (I was a huge fan.) The producer of the show "Night calls," Jamie Batista, called me one day and offered me an amatuer guest spot on the show. I flew to LA and appeared on.(summer 2000). While in LA, I met an agent in the business and stayed in touch with him over the next 6 months. Feb. of 2001 I moved there for good.

Why did you decide to get into porn?
I'm not sure what it was exactly. I had the opportunity. That's the main thing. Not too many people know how to start and I already had someone who wanted me in, an agent. I also got in because I thought I would make a lot of money at it. It was exciting. It's a self-esteem booster. I'm an exhibitionist at heart. I think it was a combination of factors.

Did many people on campus know about you stripping while you were there? Did you have to keep it a secret?
Not too many people actually knew. However, a couple of guys saw me in St. Louis one weekend at an amatuer contest, and it didn't take long for the rumor to spread!!!

What is the porn industry like?
That's a pretty general question. It's a huge industry, but a small family. When everything else is in a recession, we still thrive. It's fun. It's hard work. No matter if you do 1 movie or 1,000, you'll always be in porn.

What is the most difficult aspect of the job of an adult film star?
Maintaining, I think. Keeping yourself in good shape and looking good for the camera. My job, although easy a lot of the time, is physically draining as well. The positions my body is put in, the places I have sex, the length of time that I hold poses--these are all things that strain the body. And the time on set can be anywhere from 4 hours to 19 hours. It's a full-time job, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

What do you do in films and what don't you do?
In films I do guys, I do girls, I do what turns me on. I do a lot of fetish work. I don't do anal, gang bangs, bukkake's, or ATMs (ass-to-mouth). There are a few companies that I won't work for and a lot of people I won't work with.

Have you met any other EIU students in the adult industry?
No, I haven't. But, I do have a friend on the business side of things whose little brother goes there now!

I've read you discovered your bisexuality while at Eastern. How difficult was it to find women on campus to date or just fool around with? Or was that something you didn't get into on campus? Describe the situation there.
I didn't really try to get with other girls on campus. I went for the girls out of town that I didn't have to see again! But I was open with my sexuality, and pretty soon EIU girls were coming up to me saying things like, "If I ever do it, I want it to be with you!" I had a contest with a good guy friend of mine one year to see who could sleep with the most girls. He beat me, but only by one!

How accepting is Eastern as a campus for alternative lifestyles?
I always thought that Eastern was pretty accepting of alternative lifestyles. At least as accepting as they could be in central Illinois. But I've recently heard that a lot of people in that area have issues with my interracial scenes. It makes me sick to think that someone would have a problem with interracial sex.

Do you keep in touch with anyone at the sorority? How do they feel about your venture into porn?
I haven't spoken to any of the girls since I was in school. I was always a little more wild than they liked, I think!

On one hand, we imagine your sisters must be pretty supportive of your success, but we also imagine they've gotten a little grief from other fraternities and sororities about your career choice. What would you say to your sisters who have run into this problem? What would you say to the people ridiculing your sorority because of your profession?
I've never had any sister or brother say anything negative about my career choice. I actually have sisters from all over the US email me giving me props. They recognize our letters tattooed on my ass (left).

Those who want to ridicule my sorority because of my profession, I would say that my career choice has no bearing whatsoever on which sorority I was in. My job is what I do, it's not who I am.

Have you ever considered coming back to campus for an autograph signing or shooting an adult film there? Why or why not?
I would love to come back and do a signing there! I'm actaully doing one close to home (in Marshall in February). If someone invited me to come there and sign, I would be there. As for the movie, if I could get my crew to film there, I know several individuals I wouldn't mind seeing on camera with me!

We've read that some porn stars really get pleasure out of the idea thousands of people are getting off to your films? Others say it's just business. What do you think? How does it feel to think there are hundreds of guys in dorms across Eastern have kicked back and watched your films?
Honestly, it is such a turn on to think of other people getting off to me getting off. I love to watch guys masturbate. To think of them jerking to me, really gets me going!

When's the last time you went back to campus? Why did you go back/why haven't you been back?
I haven't been back to campus since finals my senior year. I didn't want to walk through graduation. I live in LA now, and it's just hard for me to get back there too often.

Who was your favorite teacher? Why?
My junior year English lit teacher. I can't remember her name, but she was a self-proclaimed witch who took meccas to Salem every year. She was interesting and taught me about literature. She taught me the difference between written fact, and written story. And, she really made me question my religious beliefs.

What's the toughest thing about being an education major at Eastern?
The worst thing was spending all my regular hours in class, and then going to a junior high somewhere and spending almost the same amount of time in that school!

What's your greatest memory of Eastern (regular student answer)?
My greatest memory of Eastern is all the weekends rollin to STU's with my crew!

What's your greatest memory of Eastern (superstar porn answer)?
Having sex with my girlfriend while about 200 frat boys watched!

Who is your favorite EIU alum?
My girl Meghan Kincaid and her boy RC. They taught me about real fun. Meghan showed me the places to go, and how to get in those places before my time!!!

What activities were you in? Did you have any off-campus jobs?
The only activity I was in was Sigma Sigma Sigma. I worked at Stix, Maurices, stripped, and worked one summer at Ken Diepholz Chevrolet.

What was the best thing about Eastern?
Having fun with your friends. Eastern was the perfect size campus to meet people and make friends.

What was your favorite bar?
Although Stix was my home, I had more good times at STU's. I spent a few drunken nights at Mom's as well!

What was your favorite restaurant?
El Rancherito. I'm a sucker for Mexican food!

What did Calli Cox, EIU student, do during a regular weekend at Eastern?
I worked a lot, studied a lot. I spent a lot of time partying. The typical.

Eastern recently changed the name of its mascot from Billy Panther to Prowler, though the team is still called the Panthers. If you could name EIU's mascot, what would you name it?
No answer. I never went to any college games.

Anything you'd like to say to Eastern students/alumni out there?
Stand up for what you feel is right. Don't EVER let people make you feel bad for choices you make.

There is a lot more gray in the world than there is black and white. And unless you've worn the shoes, don't judge.
