History of the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame
The Alaska Sports Hall of Fame was founded in 1957 to honor the state’s greatest athletes, coaches and contributors. The first class inducted consisted of five individuals: basketball player Eddie Busch, football player George Halas Sr., boxer Jack Dempsey, track & field coach Lyda Poff and hockey player Gino Gasparini.
Since then, the Hall of Fame has grown to include over 200 members. Some of the most notable inductees include Olympic gold medalist Bonnie Blair, NBA players Shawn Kemp and Carlos Boozer, NFL quarterback Mark Rypien and MLB pitcher Curt Schilling.
The Alaska Sports Hall of Fame is located in Anchorage and is open to the public year-round.

As for individual players, some of the most decorated athletes in Alaska high school basketball history include NBA player Carlos Boozer, who led Juneau-Douglas to back-to-back state titles in 1996 and 1997, future WNBA player Renee Montgomery, who led Bartlett to a state championship in 2005, and current University of Washington star Quade Green, who led West Valley to a state title in 2016.
There have been many great moments and memories made on the court during the 63 years of Alaska high school basketball. The records help us remember and celebrate those moments and achievements.
Alaska Sports Teams

Duke Players From Alaska: Alaskans have had a long history playing basketball at Duke University dating back to 1950 when Dick Snyder became one of Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s first recruits at Army. Snyder went on to be named an All-American under Krzyzewski and helped lead Army to the NCAA Elite Eight in 1972 before embarking on a 10-year NBA career with Portland, Indiana, Detroit, Kansas City/Omaha and San Antonio. He was inducted into Duke’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 1997
Duke Players from Alaska
The blue-chip state of Alaska has been producing some of the nation’s top college basketball players for years. From Trae Young to James Banks III, the Last Frontier has sent plenty of talent to the NCAA ranks. And Duke University has been one beneficiary of this pipeline, with multiple players from Alaska suit up for the Blue Devils over the years.
One of the most recent examples is former Anchorage high school star Felix Balamou, who played four seasons at Duke from 2012-2016. A 6’4 guard, Balamou was a key reserve during his time in Durham and helped Duke win a national championship as a junior in 2015. He also became the first Alaskan to play in the NBA when he appeared in two games for the Brooklyn Nets during the 2016-2017 season.
Another Alaskan player who made an impact at Duke was Mike Dunleavy Jr., who starred for the Blue Devils from 1999-2002. A 6’9 forward from Juneau, Dunleavy was a key member of Duke’s 2001 national championship team and went on to have a successful NBA career that spanned 16 seasons.
