History
The Albany Hall of Fame was created in 1954 to honor the accomplishments of people from the Capital Region who have made significant contributions to their respective fields. The hall is located in Albany, New York, and features plaques with the inductees’ names and biographical information.
The New York Sports Hall of Fame is a similar organization that honors athletes, coaches, and other figures from the state of New York who have made significant contributions to sports. The hall is located in Utica, New York.
Inductees
The Albany Hall of Fame was created to honor the accomplishments of those who have made significant contributions to the capital city of New York. The inaugural class of inductees was announced in 2014, and the first induction ceremony was held in 2015.
Since then, the Albany Hall of Fame has continued to recognize the achievements of local luminaries from a wide range of fields, including sports, arts, business, civic leadership, and more. To be eligible for induction into the Albany Hall of Fame, an individual must have been born or raised in Albany, or have spent a significant portion of their life living and working in the city.
Some of the most notable inductees into the Albany Hall of Fame include:
-Eddie Feigner: A professional softball player who pitched for numerous teams during his career; he is best known for his time with The King and His Court, a barnstorming team that travelled across America playing exhibition games.
-John Kane: An artist who is best known for his paintings depicting everyday life in Albany’s Irish community during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
-Margaret Sanger: A social reformer who advocated for birth control and reproductive rights; she founded Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
-Walt Whitman: One of America’s most important poets; he lived in Albany during the 1850s and worked as a journalist for several local newspapers.
Criteria for Induction
The Albany Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1991 to honor athletes, coaches, and contributors who have made outstanding contributions to the world of sports in Albany, New York.
Induction into the Albany Sports Hall of Fame is one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon an individual involved in athletics. The criteria for induction are as follows:
-The individual must have made a significant contribution to sports in Albany.
-The individual’s accomplishments must be widely recognized by the general public.
-The individual must be retired from his or her active involvement in sports for at least three years.
-The individual must be a citizen of good standing in the community.
Events
The Albany Hall of Fame is pleased to announce its newest inductees! The Class of 2020 will be honored at our annual induction ceremony on October 1st. This year’s honorees are:
* George H. Carman, Jr. – A pioneer in the field of sports medicine, Dr. Carman was a team physician for the New York Jets for 25 years and served as the head orthopedic surgeon at Albany Medical Center for more than 30 years.
* James E.C. Gannon – A longtime Albany newspaperman, Mr. Gannon was the sports editor of the Times Union from 1966 until his retirement in 2002. He was also a member of the New York State Boxing Commission from 1977 to 1985.
* Edward J. Leahy – A former state senator and assemblyman, Mr. Leahy was a key figure in the development of both amateur and professional sports in Albany during his time in office from 1975 to 1993. He was instrumental in bringing minor league baseball to Albany with the formation of the Albany-Colonie Yankees in 1983, and he helped secure funding for construction of what is now Times Union Center (then Knickerbocker Arena).

The Albany Hall of Fame is a new media project that celebrates the accomplishments of local athletes, artists, and other notable figures. The project was launched in 2019 by the Albany Times Union, and features inductees from a wide range of fields.
The Albany Hall of Fame is designed to celebrate the achievements of those who have made a significant impact on the Capital Region. The goal is to shine a light on the many people who have helped make our community what it is today.
The inaugural class of inductees includes some of the most accomplished individuals in their respective fields, including former New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter, Pro Football Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor, Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis, and world-renowned architect Frank Gehry. These men and women have all left their mark on Albany in one way or another, and they are deserving of this recognition.
