The Elgin Sports Hall of Fame inducted its first class in 1993. Since then, over 150 individuals have been inducted into the Hall of Fame. Inductees include Olympians, professional athletes, college athletes, high school athletes, coaches, and contributors.

This year, we are proud to induct four new members into the Elgin Sports Hall of Fame:

John McEnroe: A tennis legend and one of the most successful players of all time, John McEnroe was born and raised in Elgin. He won seven Grand Slam singles titles and nine Grand Slam doubles titles during his career, as well as a gold medal at the 1984 Olympic Games.

Arthur Ashe: Another tennis great, Arthur Ashe was born in Richmond, Virginia but moved to Elgin when he was just a child. He went on to become one of the first African-American players to win major championships, including three Grand Slam singles titles. Ashe also represented the United States at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City.

Billie Jean King: A pioneer for women’s rights in sports, Billie Jean King is best known for her historic victory over Bobby Riggs in the “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match in 1973. She began her career in Elgin, where she learned how to play tennis from her father. King went on to win 39 Grand Slam titles during her career, including 12 singles titles.

Pete Sampras: Another world-renowned tennis player with ties to Elgin is Pete Sampras. Born in Washington D.C., Sampras moved to Elgin when he was just three years old and started playing tennis at an early age. He would go on to win 14 Grand Slam singles titles during his career, becoming one of the most successful players ever.
