Kansas Sports Hall of Fame Inductees

The Kansas Sports Hall of Fame has announced its inductees for 2022. The class includes former Major League Baseball player Bret Saberhagen, Olympic gold medal-winning decathlete Bill Toomey, and legendary University of Kansas basketball coach Phog Allen.

Saberhagen, who played for the Kansas City Royals and New York Mets, won two World Series titles and was named World Series MVP in 1985. Toomey, who competed in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, is one of only two decathletes to win both the Olympic gold medal and the world championship. Allen coached the Jayhawks for 39 seasons, winning 746 games and leading the team to 14 conference championships.

The induction ceremony will be held on October 1, 2022 at the Wichita Boathouse.

Kansas Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

The Kansas Sports Hall of Fame will be holding its annual induction ceremony on Saturday, October 22, 2022. This year’s event will be held at the Wichita Sports Hall of Fame in Wichita, Kansas. The event will begin at 6:00pm with a reception followed by the induction ceremony at 7:00pm.

This year’s inductees include former Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson, former University of Kansas basketball player Danny Manning, former Wichita State University basketball coach Gregg Marshall, and former Kansas State University football coach Bill Snyder.

Derrick Johnson played for the Chiefs from 2005 to 2017 and is the franchise’s all-time leader in tackles. He was a four-time Pro Bowl selection and was named First-Team All-Pro in 2011.

Danny Manning is one of the most decorated players in University of Kansas history. He was a two-time National Player of the Year and led the Jayhawks to the 1988 NCAA Championship. He was also named Most Outstanding Player of that tournament.

Gregg Marshall coached Wichita State to 14 straight NCAA Tournament appearances from 2006 to 2019, including a Final Four appearance in 2013. He has been named Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year seven times and won AP Coach of the Year honors in 2014.

Bill Snyder is considered one of college football’s greatest turnaround stories after he took over as head coach at Kansas State in 1989. The Wildcats had only won eight games total in their previous three seasons before Snyder arrived but he led them to 10 or more wins 11 times during his 27 years at the helm.

Wichita Sports Hall of Fame

The Wichita Sports Hall of Fame is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2008. The mission of the Wichita Sports Hall of Fame is to recognize and honor the achievements of those who have made significant contributions to the sports community in Wichita, Kansas.

The Wichita Sports Hall of Fame currently has over 100 members, including athletes, coaches, administrators, and media members. The inductees are chosen by a selection committee consisting of local sportswriters and broadcasters.

Among the most recent inductees are two-time Olympian Dot Richardson, four-time ASA National Champion Patty Gasso, and legendary high school coach Joan Weller. These three women have had tremendous impact on the game of softball not only in Kansas, but across the country.

Dot Richardson is a living legend in the world of softball. A two-time Olympic gold medalist and member of the National Softball Hall of Fame, she has been called one of the greatest players ever to step on a field. After an illustrious career at UCLA, where she helped lead her team to three College World Series titles, Richardson went on to play for Team USA in both 1984 and 1988. She was a key player on both squads that won gold medals, and her performance at the 1988 Olympics is considered one be one of greatest individual performances in Olympic history.

Patty Gasso is one of the most successful coaches in NCAA softball history. In her 25 years at Oklahoma University, she has led her team to four national championships and eight Women’s College World Series appearances. Her teams have also won 19 conference championships and made 24 trips to regional tournaments. Under her guidance, OU has become one of the premier programs in collegiate softball.

Joan Weller is a true pioneer in Kansas high school athletics. She coached girls basketball at Shawnee Mission North High School for 32 years, winning nine state championships along the way. When she retired from coaching in 1997, her teams had compiled an incredible record of 829-107 (.886). She was inducted into both the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame before being named one Kansas Sports Hall of Famer in 2006 ufffd becoming justthe second woman (and first coach) from Kansas to achieve that distinction..

The Kansas Sports Hall of Fame is set to induct five new members in 2022. Among the inductees are two high school basketball coaches, Bob Hurley Sr. and Darryl Sutter. Both coached for many years at the high school level and had tremendous success. Hurley coached at St. Anthony’s High School in New Jersey, while Sutter coached at Highland Park High School in Illinois.

Dickey had a 17-year professional career playing for several teams including the Houston Oilers, Green Bay Packers, and Kansas City Chiefs. He finished his career with nearly 38,000 passing yards and 239 touchdown passes.

Another noteworthy individual being honored this year is Marian Washington, who was one of college basketball’s most successful coaches during her time at both University of California Berkeley and University of Kansas between 1967 and 1986. During her 19 years as a head coach at these two schools she racked up an impressive 599 wins against just 242 losses (.713 winning percentage). Her teams won nine conference championships and made 11 appearances in the NCAA tournament during her tenure. She was also elected to Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famein 1999 – becoming justthe second African American womanto achieve such a distinction (the other being Cheryl Miller).
