The Lansing Sports Hall of Fame was founded in 2006 to honor the greatest athletes, teams, and contributors to sports in the Greater Lansing area. The Hall of Fame is located at the Lansing Center in downtown Lansing, Michigan.

The first class of inductees was announced in 2007 and included such luminaries as former Detroit Lions great Lem Barney, Olympic gold medalist swimmers Matt Biondi and Janet Evans, basketball star Magic Johnson, and baseball hall of famer Harmon Killebrew.

Since then, the Hall of Fame has inducted more than 200 individuals and teams from a wide range of sports including football, basketball, baseball, hockey, golf, track & field/cross country, boxing/wrestling , bowling , auto racing , figure skating , soccer , softball , swimming & diving .

The 2021 class will be inducted on May 22nd. This year’s class includes former NFL players Braylon Edwards and Brandon Carr; Olympic gold medalist swimmer Katie Ledecky; Major League Baseball player Eric Hosmer; women’s college basketball coach Muffet McGraw; and high school football coach Jack Pine.

The Lansing Sports Hall Of Fame: The First Inductees

The Lansing Sports Hall of Fame is pleased to announce its first inductees: Al Kaline, Hank Aaron, and Sandy Koufax. These three legends of the game embody everything that is great about sports. They have each left an indelible mark on the history of our great city.

Al Kaline was born and raised in Lansing. He played his entire 22-year career with the Detroit Tigers, racking up 3,007 hits and 10 Gold Glove Awards. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1980.

Hank Aaron grew up in Mobile, Alabama, but he made his name as a slugger with the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves. He holds the Major League record for most career home runs (755) and RBIs (2,297). He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982.

Sandy Koufax is one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history. He pitched for 12 seasons with the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers, winning three Cy Young Awards and five World Series titles. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972.

Izzo, who was born and raised in iron Mountain, Michigan, played college basketball at Northern Michigan University before beginning his coaching career at Ishpeming High School. He then moved on to assistant coaching positions at University of Tulsa and Ohio State University before taking over as head coach at MSU in 1995. Izzo led the Spartans to six Final Fours and one national championship during his time at MSU, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest coaches in college basketball history.

Harwell began his broadcasting career with the Tigers in 1960 and remained with the team until 2002, calling more than 4500 games during his tenure. He also worked for CBS Radio from 1967-68 and served as a play-by-play announcer for NBC’s Game of The Week from 1971-75. In addition to his work in baseball, Harwell was also known for his work with the United Negro College Fund and Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Phelps is widely considered to be the greatest Olympian of all time, winning a total of 28 medals (23 gold) over five different Summer Games appearances. Phelps was born in Baltimore and began swimming at an early age; he went on to attend high school near Philadelphia before enrolling at Michigan State University (MSU). Phelps left MSU after one semester to train full-time for the 2000 Summer Olympics; he would go on to win five medals (four golds) in Sydney that year. Phelps continued his dominance into subsequent Olympic games; he won eight gold medals at Athens 2004, six golds plus two bronze medals Beijing 2008 (where he famously outswam rival Ryan Lochte), four golds plus two silvers London 2012 ,and five more golds plus one silver Rio de Janeiro 2016 . In addition to his unparalleled Olympic accomplishments ,Phelps is also a world record holder in several events .
