The Lorain Sports Hall of Fame is dedicated to recognizing the achievements of athletes, coaches, and contributors to athletics in Lorain County. The hall was founded in 1981 and inducted its first class in 1982. Since then, it has recognized more than 400 individuals.

Lorain County Speedway
Lorain County Speedway is a historic racetrack located in Lorain, Ohio. The track was originally built in 1948 and has been home to many different racing events over the years. In recent years, the track has become known for its hall of fame, which honors some of the greatest drivers in the history of the sport. The hall of fame is a great way to learn about the rich history of racing in Lorain County and to see some of the amazing cars that have raced on the track over the years. Lorain Catholic Football
Lorain Catholic High School has a long and storied tradition of football excellence. The school has produced numerous NFL players, including Hall of Famers Jim Brown and Marion Motley. Lorain Catholic teams have won multiple state championships, and the school’s stadium is considered one of the best in the state.
Lorain County Speedway:
The Lorain County Speedway is a historic racetrack that has been in operation since the early 1900s. The track has hosted some of the biggest races in Ohio, including the prestigious All-American 400. The speedway was inducted into the Ohio Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2009, and its rich history makes it a must-visit for any racing fan.
Other Lorain County Sports Teams
Lorain County is home to a number of other sports teams, including the Lorain Catholic Football team. The team has been extremely successful in recent years, winning the state championship in 2013. The team is coached by Jason Gibson and plays its home games at Jack Gibbons Stadium.

Lorain Catholic football is one of the most storied programs in Ohio high school football history. The program has produced numerous NFL players and coaches, as well as College Football Hall of Famers.
Some of the greatest athletes to come out of Lorain County include Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Brown, who is considered one of the greatest running backs of all time; Baseball Hall of Famer Lou Boudreau, who played for the Cleveland Indians; and Olympic gold medalist Jesse Owens, who set four world records in track and field at the 1936 Summer Olympics.

The Lorain County Speedway Hall of Fame was created to honor those who have made significant contributions to the sport of auto racing in Lorain County, Ohio. The hall of fame recognizes drivers, car owners, promoters, track officials, media members, and others who have played a role in making auto racing one of the most popular sports in the county.
Lorain County Contributors
Lorain County has a long and rich history, dating back to the founding of the first permanent settlement in 1807. The county is home to a number of significant historical figures, including several who have been inducted into the Lorain County Speedway Hall of Fame. Among these are NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt, Sr., who won a record seven Winston Cup championships; Richard Petty, often referred to as “The King” of stock car racing; and Junior Johnson, one of the most influential figures in NASCAR history.
Other notable Lorain County residents include football player Jim Thorpe, who was named the greatest athlete of the 20th century by ESPN; baseball player Roger Clemens, who won a record seven Cy Young Awards; and basketball player LeBron James, who is widely considered one of the greatest players in NBA history.
Lorain County Memories
Lorain County Speedway, which first opened its doors in 1948, has been a mecca for racing fans from all over the Midwest. The track has seen some of the biggest names in racing history come through its gates, and this year, the Lorain County Speedway Hall of Fame was created to honor those who have made significant contributions to the sport.
This past weekend, the inaugural class of inductees was announced, and it includes some of the most influential people in Lorain County racing history. From drivers to promoters to volunteers, these men and women have helped make Lorain County Speedway what it is today.
We sat down with several of the inductees to get their thoughts on being honored by the speedway and what Lorain County Speedway means to them.
“It’s a great honor,” said Bob Daugherty, who raced at the speedway for many years before becoming a promoter. “I’ve been involved with this track for almost 40 years now, and it’s been a big part of my life. To be recognized by the speedway like this is really special.”
“This track has always had a special place in my heart,” said Jerry Cooke, another driver turned promoter. “I’ve spent countless hours here over the years, and it’s been a great way to meet people and make lifelong friends.”
For many of those being inducted into the Hall of Fame, Lorain County Speedway holds a lot of memories. For Bill Boresch Sr., one of those memories is winning his very first race at the track back in 1968.
“That was a pretty special moment for me,” he recalled. “To be able to win at my home track in front of all my family and friends was something I’ll never forget.”
Boresch went on to win multiple championships at Lorain County Speedway throughout his career.
Inductee Dick Tobias also has fond memories of racing at Lorain County Speedway; he even met his wife Betty while racing here! The two were married for 54 years before Betty passed away last year.
“She was my biggest fan,” Tobias said with a smile. “Every time I raced she would be there cheering me on.” Tobias continued racing until just a few years ago when he finally hung up his helmet at age 80. He still comes out to watch races whenever he can though; after all, it’s still one of his favorite places to be
Lorain County Legacy
Lorain County is home to a rich history and vibrant culture. From the Lorain County Speedway Hall of Fame to the Lorain Catholic football team, there are many ways to celebrate the county’s legacy. The Lorain County Legacy project was created to help preserve and share this history with future generations. Through interviews, events, and online resources, the project provides a window into the past and present of Lorain County.
