Macon Sports Hall Of Fame: 2021 Inductees

The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame announced their 2021 inductees and among the list are some familiar names with strong ties to Macon. The class includes former Major League Baseball pitcher Tom Glavine, University of Georgia football legend Herschel Walker, and Olympic gold medalist Gwen Torrence.

Tom Glavine was born and raised in nearby Billerica, Massachusetts but he has called Atlanta home since his days with the Braves. He played 22 seasons in Major League Baseball, most notably with the Braves from 1987-2002 and again from 2008-2010. He was a 10-time All-Star, a two-time World Series champion, and the 1995 National League Cy Young Award winner. His 305 career victories rank him as one of only 24 pitchers in MLB history to reach 300 wins.

Herschel Walker is considered one of the greatest college football players of all time. He played three seasons at the University of Georgia before going on to have a successful NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys, Minnesota Vikings, Philadelphia Eagles, and New York Giants. In 1982, as a freshman at UGA, he won the Heisman Trophy ufffd college football’s most prestigious award. He went on to be named SEC Player of the Year twice and was inducted into both the College Football Hall of Fame (1999) and Pro Football Hall of Fame (2001).

Gwen Torrence is a native of Decatur, Georgia who competed in track & field at Stanford University before going on to have an illustrious professional career. She won six Olympic medals ufffd three gold, two silver, and one bronze ufffd between 1992 and 1996; including gold medals in both the 200 meter dash and 4x100 meter relay at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. She also held world records in both the 100 meter dash (10.8 seconds)

and 200 meter dash (21.77 seconds).

Georgia Sports Hall of Fame 2021 Inductees:

ufffd Tom Glavine – Former Major League Baseball pitcher who played his entire career with the Atlanta Braves. A five-time National League All-Star, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014.

ufffd Dominique Wilkins – NBA legend who played for the Atlanta Hawks from 1982-1994. A nine-time NBA All-Star, he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.

ufffd Ronnie Brown – NFL running back who played for the Miami Dolphins from 2005-2010 and the San Diego Chargers from 2011-2012. He was a Pro Bowl selection in 2008 and 2009.

ufffd Teresa Edwards – One of the most decorated Olympians in history, she won four gold medals and one bronze medal over her career. She is a member of both the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame and USA Basketball’s Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame.
