Introduction
The Michigan Sports Hall of Fame is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1957 to honor outstanding athletes, coaches, and contributors who have made significant contributions to sports in the state of Michigan. The Hall of Fame currently has over 300 inductees, including such notable figures as Gordie Howe, Magic Johnson, and Steve Yzerman.
The Michigan Sports Hall of Fame is located in Lansing, Michigan and includes a museum with interactive exhibits highlighting the accomplishments of the inductees. The museum is open to the public year-round and also hosts various events throughout the year.
Nominees for induction into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame are selected by a statewide panel of sportswriters, broadcasters, and other sports professionals. History
The Michigan Sports Hall of Fame was founded in 1957 by a group of sports enthusiasts in Detroit. The first induction class included athletes such as Ty Cobb, Mickey Cochrane, and Hank Greenberg. Since then, the Hall has inducted over 300 individuals who have made significant contributions to Michigan sports.
Lansing Michigan:
Lansing is home to the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame, which was founded in 1957 to honor those who have made significant contributions to Michigan sports. The Hall is located on the campus of Lansing Community College and features exhibits on Michigan’s sporting history. Inductees into the Hall include athletes, coaches, and administrators who have made significant contributions to Michigan sports.
Midland Michigan:
Midland is home to the Midland Civic Arena, which is the former home of the Midland Hockey Association and the Midland Amateur Athletic Association. The arena was built in 1938 and served as a venue for hockey games, figure skating competitions, and other sporting events. In recent years, the arena has been used for youth hockey programs and public ice skating.
Inductees
The Michigan Sports Hall of Fame inducts athletes, coaches, and other contributors to Michigan sports each year. The Lansing Michigan Sports Hall of Fame was founded in 2006 and the first class was inducted in 2007. Since then, the Lansing Michigan Sports Hall of Fame has inducted over 150 people.
The Midland Michigan Sports Hall of Fame was founded in 2014 and the first class was inducted in 2015. The Midland Michigan Sports Hall of Fame has inducted over 50 people.
The Michigan High School Coaches AssociationHall of Fame began honoring coaches in 1974 who have made significant contributions to high school athletics in Michigan. As of 2020, there are 578 members of the MHSCA Hall of Fame.
The Basketball Coaches Associationof Michigancreated a hall of fame in 1985 to honor those who have contributed to basketball in the state at all levels. As of 2019, there are 97 members in the BCAM HoF
Criteria for Induction
The Michigan Sports Hall of Fame was founded in 1957 to honor the achievements of Michigan athletes, coaches, and others who have made significant contributions to sports in the state.
Induction into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame is one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a sports figure in Michigan. To be eligible for induction, an individual must meet certain criteria as set forth by the Hall of Fame’s Board of Directors.
Some of the criteria used for selection include: outstanding achievement in their sport at the national or international level; significant contribution to the growth and development of their sport in Michigan; and embodiment of the highest ideals of sportsmanship.
The Board also takes into consideration an individual’s character, integrity, and reputation both on and off the field of play when making its decisions.
Once an individual is nominated, they undergo a thorough vetting process that includes reviews by a Selection Committee as well as a vote by the Board of Directors.
Only those individuals who receive unanimous approval from both the Selection Committee and Board are inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Nomination Process
The Michigan Sports Hall of Fame accepts nominations for induction each year from the public. A nomination form and instructions are available on our website, www.michigansportshof.org. The deadline to submit a completed nomination form is March 1st.
A nine-person Selection Committee, comprised of sports media members from around the state, meets in early April to review all eligible nominees and select the inductees in each of the five categories: Athlete, Coach, Contributor, Team and Veteran.
To be eligible for consideration, an individual must have made a significant contribution to Michigan sports either as an athlete, coach or contributor and must be retired from their active involvement in sports for at least three years (athletes only). There is no waiting period for coaches and contributors. An athlete may also be nominated posthumously.

Selection Process
The Michigan Sports Hall of Fame Selection Process is a three-step process that involves the public, a blue ribbon panel of experts and finally, the Board of Directors.
First, the public nominates their favorite athletes, coaches, teams and contributors to Michigan sports. A blue ribbon panel then narrows down the list of nominees to 20 finalists in each category. The Board of Directors then vote on who will be inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame each year.
This process ensures that only the most deserving individuals are inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame each year.
Events
The Lansing Michigan Sports Hall of Fame will be hosting their annual induction ceremony on October 17th. This year’s class includes some of the most accomplished athletes and coaches in Michigan history.
Some of the inductees this year include:
-Tom Izzo, legendary Michigan State University basketball coach. Izzo has led the Spartans to 7 Final Fours and 1 National Championship during his tenure. He is widely considered one of the greatest coaches in college basketball history.
-Mitch Albom, sports columnist for the Detroit Free Press and best-selling author. Albom is a member of the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Hall of Fame.
-Dick Vitale, iconic college basketball broadcaster for ESPN. Vitale has been calling games for over 40 years and is known for his enthusiastic style and catchphrases like “awesome, baby!”

The Michigan Sports Hall of Fame is pleased to announce its 2019 ballot. The 27th annual induction ceremony will be held on Saturday, September 28th at the Lansing Center in Lansing, Michigan. The public is invited to attend and tickets can be purchased online or by calling (517) 485-3170.
This year’s ballot features 14 nominees in five categories: Athletes, Coaches, Contributors, Teams, and a special Centennial category for individuals who made their greatest contributions to sports in Michigan during the state’s first 100 years of existence.
The athletes on this year’s ballot include some of the biggest names in Michigan sports history. They include former Detroit Lions great Charlie Sanders, University of Michigan basketball legend Cazzie Russell, Detroit Red Wings star Ted Lindsay, and Detroit Tigers great Alan Trammell.
Coaches up for induction include John Fisher, who led the University of Detroit Mercy men’s basketball team to two NCAA Final Fours; Herb Brooks, who coached the United States Olympic hockey team to a gold medal in 1980; and Bo Schembechler, who compiled a 194-48-5 record over 21 seasons as head coach of the University of Michigan football team.
Contributors nominated for induction include longtime Detroit Free Press sports columnist Mitch Albom and George Sippel, one of the founders of Little League Baseball in Michigan.
Centennial nominees include Branch Rickey, executive with both Major League Baseball’s St. Louis Cardinals and Brooklyn Dodgers who helped break baseball’s color barrier by signing Jackie Robinson; Glenn “Pop” Warner, legendary college football coach whose teams won eight national championships; Steve Fischer , pioneer skiing instructor at Boyne Mountain Resort;and Clara Briggs Munson , first woman elected to membership in the National Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame .
