Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame Inductees
The Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame is proud to announce its 2022 inductees! This year’s class includes some of the most iconic names in Tennessee sports history, including former NFL quarterback Peyton Manning, Nashville Predators defenseman P.K. Subban, and University of Tennessee women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt.
Manning needs no introduction – he is one of the most decorated quarterbacks in NFL history and led the Denver Broncos to victory in Super Bowl 50. He also holds the record for most passing yards and touchdown passes in a career, and was named MVP of the Super Bowl twice.
Subban is a Nashville Predators legend and one of the best defensemen in the NHL. He was a key member of the Preds’ Stanley Cup-winning team in 2017, and was awarded the Norris Trophy (given to the league’s top defenseman) in 2013.
Summitt is a true pioneer in women’s college basketball. She coached at UT for 38 years, winning eight national championships and finishing her career with more wins than any other Division I basketball coach – men or women. She was also inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000.
These three legends will be formally inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame at our annual induction ceremony on October 1, 2022. We hope you’ll join us in celebrating their extraordinary accomplishments!
Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame Members
The Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame is proud to announce its Class of 2022 inductees. This year’s class includes some of the most accomplished and influential athletes, coaches, and contributors in the history of Tennessee sports.
Among the inductees are former University of Tennessee football coach Phillip Fulmer, Nashville Predators head coach Peter Laviolette, Olympic gold medalist Scott Hamilton, and longtime Major League Baseball broadcaster Ernie Johnson Jr.
“We are thrilled to welcome this outstanding group of men and women into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame,” said TSHAF president & CEO Rick Christophel. “Each one has made a lasting impact on the world of sports, and we are honored to recognize their contributions.”
The Class of 2022 will be officially inducted at the 54th Annual Induction Banquet, which will be held on Saturday, June 4th at Music City Center in Nashville. The Nashville Sports Hall of Fame is proud to announce its Class of 2022 inductees: former Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair, country music legend Ronnie Milsap, longtime Vanderbilt University men’s basketball coach Roy Skinner and legendary high school football coach Robert E. “Bobby” Fulton.
These four individuals have been selected for their outstanding contributions to sports in the state of Tennessee. They will be formally inducted at the Nashville Sports Awards Banquet on Saturday, February 4, 2022 at Music City Center.
Steve McNair was one of the most electrifying players in NFL history. He led the Titans to Super Bowl XXXIV and was named co-MVP of the league in 2003. He retired as the franchise’s all-time leader in passing yards and touchdowns.
Ronnie Milsap is a Country Music Hall of Famer and one of the most successful crossover artists in history. He has won six Grammy Awards and had 41 No. 1 hits on the country charts. His signature song, “Smoky Mountain Rain,” is an enduring classic.
Roy Skinner coached Vanderbilt basketball for 23 seasons, compiling a record of 409-297 (.580). His teams won 20 or more games eight times and made seven NCAA Tournament appearances. He remains the only coach in school history to lead Vanderbilt to back-to-back Southeastern Conference titles (1965 & 1966).
Bobby Fulton compiled a record of 328-87-8 (.786) over 40 seasons as a head football coach at three different high schools in Tennessee – Goodlettsville High School (1956-1959), Donelson High School (1960-1974) and Montgomery Bell Academy (1975-1995). His teams won 11 state championships and he was named Coach of the Year 12 times by various publications.
Sports Hall of Fame
The Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame is set to induct six new members in 2022. The class will be formally enshrined during an induction ceremony at the Nashville Museum on Saturday, May 14th.
The six individuals who make up the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2022 are:
– Michael Breen: A former NFL linebacker who played for the New York Jets and New Orleans Saints.
– Pat Head Summitt: The legendary University of Tennessee women’s basketball coach who won eight national championships and amassed 1,098 career wins (the most in NCAA history).
– Peyton Manning: One of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, Manning played for both the Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos during his storied NFL career. He was a five-time MVP and two-time Super Bowl champion.
– Reggie White: A defensive end who is considered one of the best players in NFL history. He spent most of his career with the Philadelphia Eagles but also had stints with the Green Bay Packers and Carolina Panthers.
– Steve Spurrier: A College Football Hall of Famer, Spurrier enjoyed great success as a head coach at both the University of Florida and South Carolina. He also had a brief NFL coaching stint with the Washington Redskins.
– Willie Gault: A wide receiver who played in the NFL for 11 seasons with several teams, including the Chicago Bears (with whom he won a Super Bowl title) and Los Angeles Raiders.
Hall of Fame Inductees
The Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame announced their 2022 inductees today. The class includes former NFL quarterback Peyton Manning, Nashville Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne, and University of Tennessee women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt. Also being inducted are former Vanderbilt University football coach James Franklin and NASCAR driver Darrell Waltrip.
This year’s class is one of the most accomplished and decorated groups in the history of the Hall of Fame. Manning is a two-time Super Bowl champion and was named the NFL’s Most Valuable Player five times. Rinne is a three-time Vezina Trophy winner as the NHL’s top goaltender. Summitt won eight national championships during her 38-year coaching career at UT, which is more than any other college basketball coach, male or female.
Franklin led Vanderbilt to nine bowl games in his six seasons as head coach before leaving for Penn State in 2014. Waltrip is a three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and one of only four drivers to win 200 races in NASCAR’s top level. He is also a member of the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America.
The induction ceremony will be held on October 22nd at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.
