Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame
The Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame is a not-for-profit organization that celebrates and honors the accomplishments of athletes, coaches, and builders from the region. The Hall of Fame was established in 1966 and is located in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
The Hall of Fame recognizes athletes who have competed at the provincial, national, or international level; coaches who have made significant contributions to their sport; and builders who have made significant contributions to the development of sport in Northwestern Ontario.
Inductees into the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame are chosen by a selection committee which is composed of members of the community who are knowledgeable about sports in the region.
Notably, the first inductee into the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame was boxer George Chuvalo. Chuvalo fought many famous boxers during his career including Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1967.
Animals in the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame
The Canadian Sports Hall of Fame is home to many great athletes, both human and animal. Among the furry, feathered, and scaly inductees are some of the most celebrated athletes in Canadian history. Here are just a few of the incredible animals who have been honored by the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame.
Horses have played a big role in Canadian sports history, and several great equine athletes have been inducted into the Hall of Fame. One of the most famous is Northern Dancer, a thoroughbred racehorse who was born in 1961 in Ontario. He went on to become one of the greatest racehorses of all time, winning 64% of his starts and setting multiple records. Northern Dancer was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1974.
Another great horse inductee is Red Rum, a champion steeplechaser who competed in England in the 1970s. He holds the record for most Grand National wins, with three victories between 1973 and 1977. Red Rum was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1984.
Not to be outdone by their equine counterparts, dogs have also made their mark on Canadian sports history. One notable canine athlete is Blitzen, a German Shepherd who became famous as an avalanche rescue dog in British Columbia during the 1950s and 60s. He helped save many lives during his career and was even featured on television and in magazines. Blitzen was posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2006.
Other animal inductees include Nijinsky II, a champion racehorse; Chimo, an RCMP search-and-rescue dog; Ruffian, another great racehorse; Mighty Mouse II, a world champion rodeo bull; and Mosi-Tunga, a gorilla who played basketball at Toronto Zoo! These amazing animals have all made significant contributions to Canadian sports history and are rightfully recognized as legends by the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame
Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame
The Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame was established in 1955 to honour athletes who have competed in the Olympic Games and made a significant contribution to the development of sport in Canada. The first inductees were figure skater Barbara Ann Scott and swimmer Percy Williams. Since then, over 200 individuals from a variety of sports have been inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame:
The Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1974 to recognize the achievements of athletes, coaches, officials, and builders who have made a significant contribution to sport in Northwestern Ontario. The first induction ceremony was held in 1975 and since then over 400 individuals have been inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Animals in the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame:
The Canadian Sports Hall of Fame recognizes the contributions of animals that have made a significant impact on sport in Canada. The first animal to be inducted into the Hall was Greyhound racing dog Wildwood Express in 1965. Other notable inductees include thoroughbred racehorse Northern Dancer, hockey player Bobby Orr’s Labrador Retriever Sable, and sled dog team leader Chinook II.

The fight between Ali and Chuvalo is considered one of the most brutal in boxing history. Both men went toe-to-toe for 15 rounds, with neither fighter giving an inch. In the end, Ali emerged victorious, but Chuvalo gave him everything he had.
The “ctv olympic commentators” is a Canadian sports broadcasting company that was founded in 1952. The company has been around for over 60 years and has aired many Olympics, Stanley Cups, and other sporting events.
