Some halls of fame only recognize achievements at the professional level, while others also consider amateur athletes. Some halls of fame are specific to one sport, while others honor athletes from multiple sports.

The first known sports hall of fame was established in the United Kingdom in 1883 to honor cricketers who had played for England in international matches. Since then, many other countries have followed suit and established their own national halls of fame.
