Upstate New York Sports Hall of Fame

The Upstate New York Sports Hall of Fame is a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring the achievements of athletes from the region. The Hall of Fame was founded in 2006 and is located in Schenectady, NY. Each year, a class of inductees is selected based on their contributions to sports in the region.

The Upstate New York Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2014 includes Al Inkala, a former professional football player who played for the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots; Redwood City Black History Museum founder John William Templeton; and basketball player Connie Hawkins.

Al Inkala was born in Erie, Pennsylvania in 1944. He played football at the University at Buffalo from 1962 to 1965. He was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in 1966 and played for them until 1967. He then played for the New England Patriots from 1968 to 1970. After his playing career ended, he worked as a coach and scout for various teams. In 2013, he was inducted into the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame.

John William Templeton was born in Redwood City, California in 1879. He was one of the first African American students to attend Stanford University, where he studied history and sociology. After graduation, he returned to Redwood City and became active in local politics. In addition to founding the Redwood City Black History Museum, he also helped establish several other institutions including: The San Mateo County branch of the NAACP; The Peninsula Housing Association; And The Youth Guidance Center Board of Directors.

Connie Hawkins was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1942. A gifted athlete, he excelled at basketball and baseball while attending Boys High School. After high school, he attended Iowa State University on a basketball scholarship but left after being accusedof involvementin a point-shaving scandal (a charge that was later proven false). He then spent several years playing professional basketball with various teams before finally being drafted bythe NBA’sPhoenix Sunsin 1969. During his time withthe Suns,he became oneof th team’s most popular playersandwas nicknamed”The Hawk”.He retiredfrombasketballin 1976but remained activewithinthe communitythroughouthis life

The University of Pennsylvania’s Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2014 was recently announced, and it includes some truly incredible athletes. From Al Inkala, who won an Olympic gold medal in hockey, to Redwood City’s own Black History Museum, the class is full of people who have made significant contributions to the world of sports.

This year’s class will be inducted at a ceremony on October 18th, and we can’t wait to see all of these amazing people receive the recognition they deserve.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Al Inkala, a beloved member of the UP sports community.

Al was inducted into the UP Sports Hall of Fame in 2014, and his contributions to the world of athletics will be remembered forever. A true pioneer, he was one of the first African American coaches in NCAA Division I history.

He coached at Redwood City Black History Museum for many years, and his impact on young athletes was immeasurable. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Peninsula Sports-A Legacy
