Piedmont Sports Hall Of Fame: Inductees

The Piedmont Sports Hall of Fame was created to honor the greatest athletes and coaches from the Piedmont region of North Carolina. Every year, a new class of inductees is chosen by a committee of local sports media members and historians. This year’s class includes some of the most accomplished athletes and coaches in Piedmont history.

Among this year’s inductees are former major league baseball player Billy Sample, who played for the Texas Rangers, New York Yankees, and Atlanta Braves; former University of North Carolina basketball coach Roy Williams; and former NFL quarterback Sonny Jurgensen. Also being inducted this year are two posthumous honorees: former NASCAR driver Wendell Scott, who was the first African-American to win a NASCAR race; and longtime high school football coach Jim “Red” Parker.

Another popular event is the Piedmont Sports Hall of Fame Golf Tournament. This annual tournament raises money to support the Hall of Fame’s mission while also giving participants a chance to play on some of the most prestigious golf courses in North Carolina. The tournament typically features foursomes made upof one celebrity golfer and three amateurs, with prizes awarded to winners in both gross and net divisions.

The first class of inductees was honored at a banquet on October 12, 2013. The class included former major league baseball player Billy Williams, Olympic gold medalist Gail Devers, and NFL Pro Bowl linebacker Lawrence Taylor.

Since its inception, the Piedmont Sports Hall of Fame has inducted nearly 50 individuals into its ranks. Each year, new members are chosen by a vote of the Hall of Fame’s Selection Committee.
